Sitting in the kitchen: April

Indeed, it had been the most chilly April ever. I remember, in my childhood once it was snowing in the middle of April, but only for two days, and, obviously, it was melting sugar dusting rather than regular snow. .. This year we have not been experiencing snow in April, but the matter is it was very coldy all the month long. I know one person, who is very glad of it – it’s my dog! Having thick, black fur she fares well in chill, but she’s very tired in a summertime.

I’m making pizza from spelt flour for the first time ( yeasty, of course). ( Maybe I will start with a cooking posts here, but later). To be frank, I don’ t like spelt and I’m not sure shall I repurchase it? I’m aware how wholesome this kind of flour is,  although  I like a classic pizza dough much more. Late in the night I hear clearly the sounds of the freight trains, which are at the other shore of the river Vistula…

Recently I saw a hedgehog. I’ve taken the photo, but into the darkness. I’ve been meeting her/him for the long time, about several years I think. Usually I am feeding this hog with my dog’s treats. Taking it very proof, it’s impossible to define, is that one hog or a few hogs… In my mind everytime I think : ” This hog again!”, but I don’t know for sure how many hogs I have been meeting. In general, they eat meat and have a tails. Did you know that? The tails are very short, therefore is really difficult to notice it. Hedgehogs can eat dog’s snacks and canned cat’s food. Here in Poland many people are completely sure that hedgehogs are vege persons, but not. People think that hogs eat an apples, because they remember that “knowledge” from the cartoon books and kiddo’s stories where a hedgehog has been always with an apple … The truth is, that they could eat an apple, and also meat. I’ve known, that hogs are in the habit of hunting for snakes!

In the Easter morning wild boars were here. Big herd it was, and maybe with kiddos because I ‘ve seen how huge is the area of their activity… Splendid! The shore of the pond  has been destroyed. They were digging, digging all the night beetwen the Great Saturday and the Easter Sunday. On the pavement next to the pond , which you know well from my photos, the boars leaved many pieces of  the terrain and grass – such an amazing view ! Fortunately, it seems  like people here rather like them and they don’t feel bothered with that mess. One man who lives here and is a hunter ( very dreadful person, indeed) had been trying hard to spread the hate against boars, but in vain. He went to the local newspaper , and also likes to talk to people here, about his annoying and backward ideas. ( Hunting is a backward idea, isn’t it). Nevertheless, looks like he cannot light the panic. .. I noticed the track of a boar’s hoof  and I captured it, as you see from the start. Do you remember those tracks I had been snapping during last winter?

Lot of birds search for  food in these grooves made by wild boars. Birds are very go-ahead persons, if it comes to eat. The kiddo-swan still remains here. I’m observing him/her ( rather him) day by day. Right now he seems to be adult , so as things go I think he will be gone soon. He will join some bigger group of swans, surely. I will make a post on him soon.

Sitting in the kitchen: February

I don’t like February, and, as far as I am concerned, February is the worst month of an year. Therefore I feel happy that this is over now. Here is already spring, with quite warm, longer and sunny days . ( It was even 15 degrees above zero a few days ago). Tomorrow I will bake a spelt buns. I have not yeast at home, so I need to buy. This is much better, while the bread is made at home, don’t you. I’ve read, that in the old times flour was much better than today and spelt had been very popular in Europe, for sure in the Middle Ages. The painting by J. Vermeer ” The Milkmaid” is not that old than the Middle Ages, but I guess in those times bread was also much better than our contemporary chemical bread. ( Here read on the painting: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Milkmaid_(Vermeer) )

I saw a fox recently! ( Not a boar this time… ) This fox is almost tame and very beautiful. She/he has been living here for a few years, so from time to time is possible to see her/him. The fox usually strolls among the apartment blocks here, acting like dogs do. Everytime I met this fox I was thinking I see a dog, and after a longer moment I realised it is a fox. I think she/he also feels herself/ himslef a little bit as a dog and this is a useful trick. I see the animal wants to be accepted here and is friendly. I remember two years ago, in the wintertime, and it was after midnight, my sweet dog had decided she will make this fox run. Wow! She almost bited the fox’s tail! But very soon it turned out that the fox is much  better long distance runner than she. ( And I was the last one in that chase). The fox was out of reach!

But this time I had my dog on the leash, so firstly the fox was starring into my eyes for a moment and afterward simply went somewhere into the night, and the moon was shining. .. Here, in Warsaw, we have  quite big number of foxes. The fox I know is friendly and brave, and young. I like him a lot and hope we will meet once again. I might call the fox a friend of mine, because I have seen the animal wants me to feel like that. I know it from this look – very clever animal, indeed.

Panda Bao Bao ( not sure I wrote her name correct) has already arrived to China, and she must spend some time in a cage, so she got nostalgic. And one woman in Canada, who is a restaurant’s owner, discovered some illegal immigrants there, and she gave them breakfast. It was next to the border with the U.S. And the temperature in Lahti for today ( yesterday) was higher than zero. Don’t forget to watch the large hill competitions today! And some gorgeous people in fabulous clothes were standing along with the Queen – that’s because of some common project of the U.K. and India, although I am not big on it, so no details this time. And I am not  mad! In other words I am going to tell you, that this agressive and weird stuff is still in my livingroom. The tv set. ( As  some of you might remember, in my latest post I was wondering should I have a tv set at home or not). Mine tv set is bothering me, and I find it overwhelming ( Bao Bao, the Queen, ski jumping, a restaurant in Canada…) Nevertheless , I cannot do this right now. I cannot throw the tv set out, because I am dead keen on sport. I am completely nut about watching sport in tv! Firstly, these World Championships in Lahti, it is running right now. Secondly, European Athlethic Championship in Belgrade ahead! Not to miss! ( Not to mention about a cycling races, f.ex. Paris – Nice is upcoming soon). Especially I adore runs and I am a massive fan of Genzebe Dibaba.

One winter night I went sleep , that day I captured this last boar’s track this year. And the next day, while I had waken up, I saw it is already spring. Snow had been melting  and I felt that awesome springish warmth. It was amazing! Rain or shine, snow or shine February is a love season for squirrels. Be aware of that, lol. ( This is a squirrel track).

I am not sure I will make my millet’s pudding with a chocolate drops, or maybe I will read a book.  See you soon, guys! Love to be with you.

Tracks on snow #3

Nice to be with you again! The lack of time is spooky… So, this print above I captured into the wood here. I am not sure, seems itcould be from a deer or from some smaller wild boar.

This second photo I took also there into the wood, and I guess it must be the deer’s hoof print, because is more delicate and more slim…

duck-tracks

In the park next to my house I came across that – these are from a wild duck…

boar-track-3

That last is so impressive! I think is must be this huge boar’s  hoof print… And , what is unexpected, I saw it next to the supermarket here… Well, next to the supermarket’s bins.

Sitting in the kitchen: January

It seems like is impossible to find the name of the author of this beautiful drawning… My dog is all right now, so she is fluorishing with double energy,  is in very vivid mood and I am still tired and exhausted. It was a real challenge to me to write a few sentences yesterday! Completely lack of time… So if I read your pages later than usual, be patient and wait for me. I think you all expect something about food, if it is “kitchen” in the title of the post, and I only can tell you I already have eaten gorgeous baked feta cheese ( original Greek and bio). This is very simply, country -style dish. You have to get  feta to the casserolle pot, as much as you want to, along with chopped tomatoes and with some dried herbs, I think some Medditerranean herbs, and with a pinch of pepper. I baked it in 160 degrees, but in the recipe is 180. And it tastes amazingly with fresh buns. I want to share my finds: www.elledecoration.co.uk/news/winter-living-recipes/  and www.elledecoration.co.uk/news/winters-harvest-recipes/ . I guess you will glad if you  will give it a try.

Do you want to see our boars? I found on YT lovely video ( seems like everyone here has a video with boars and I am the only one who has not ). Those are not from my place, but also from the town… They do know how to pass the street correct: https://youtu.be/eBYZwKoCc_M  and afterward I would recommend for you another video with elk here in Warsaw. He was swimming in the river Wisła ( Vistula) and people had made a great event I don’t know why. It looks like some cellebrities are there: https://youtu.be/2OCYFK7graU . I hope you like it…

Do you still have a Christmas tree at home? I want to ask by the way, because here in the neighbourhood live some people who are in the habit of taking Christmas tree until Easter. It is impossible not to notice that tree, because it is close to their balcony doors. It looks like they crave us to see their Christmas tree – every weekend they are keeping the lights turned on, and it looks both weird and very nice…

Track on snow 2

boar-track

Hi, guys! I planned this posting to be longer, but I’m so tired by now, and I will add longer story tomorrow. My sweet dog has eaten something creepy I had to walk her severally last night – I must go sleep. It seems she is o.k. right now. Although I have to stroll with her once again, as usual. Through our land of boars… and something else ? In these days I am still looking forward for any new tracks, and today I discovered what you see below. I think it is not a boar print. It must be elk/ moose, don’t you mind? ( Moose maybe not, I read that moose is in America and here in Europe we have elks). Anyhow, what it is?
